Toxicology is a field of science that helps us understand the harmful effects that chemicals, substances, or situations can have on people, animals, and the environment. Toxicology uses the power of science to predict which chemicals may cause harm and how they may do so, and then shares that information to protect public health. When we talk about toxicology, it is important to keep in mind that the dose of the substance or chemical to which a person is exposed is another important factor in toxicology. All substances have the potential to be toxic if administered to humans and other living organisms under certain conditions and at certain doses or levels. For example, one or two aspirins may be good for your health, but taking a bottle of aspirins can be harmful. The field of toxicology attempts to understand and identify at what dose and through what exposure a substance poses a danger.
