Coca is a plant rich in mineral nutrients, essential oils, and various compounds, some of which have pharmacological effects. Among these is the alkaloid cocaine, which in its concentrated or synthesized form acts as a stimulant with potentially addictive properties. However, for centuries, Indigenous peoples of the Andean region have safely chewed coca leaves and consumed coca tea as part of their daily lives. This traditional practice poses no harm and offers notable health benefits.
When chewed, coca leaves function as a mild stimulant, helping to alleviate hunger, thirst, pain, and fatigue. They are also effective in combating altitude sickness. Every day, millions of people in the Andes chew coca leaves and drink coca tea without adverse effects. In fact, these practices are considered sacred by Indigenous cultures. Beyond the Andean region, coca tea is recognized for its traditional use in countries like Bolivia, highlighting its broader cultural and medicinal significance.
